Start your day with a visit to Rothamsted Research, the oldest continually operating agricultural research station in the world. Take time to visit this cultural icon, then head over to St Albans in the afternoon.

St Alban was a Roman soldier who was the first Christian martyr in the UK. There is an impressive Cathedral on the site of his martyrdom, as well as some of the best Roman remains in the UK! It is also a very picturesque county town, with a traditional street market on Wednesdays.

Here is the suggested itinerary:

  • Travel to Harpenden by train*, arriving about 10.00. Walk 850m (0.5 mile) to Rothamsted Research.

  • Visit Rothamsted, including:
    - Coffee and pastries upon arrival
    - Introductory talk on the history of Rothamsted and its contribution to agriculture
    - Introductory talk to the wheat programme
    - Visit the farm to see two of the “Classical” experiments which established the science of plant nutrition:

    - Tour of automated field phenotyping system (and demonstration of drones if the weather permits)
    -
Tour of the archive of samples from the classical experiments (dating back to 1843)
  1. Take a tour of the farm and take in the history of St Albans, then have lunch* in town with the group or visit one of the numerous cafes and coffee shops.

  2. Return from St Albans by train* or on foot (15-minute walk)
