Obituary

Lloyd W. Rooney

Lloyd Rooney, professor emeritus in the Texas A&M University, Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, passed away at home on June 23, 2019. Lloyd was born on July 17, 1939, in Rawns County, Kansas. He attended elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse and graduated from McDonald High School (1957). He later attended Kansas State University, earning B.S. (1961) and Ph.D. (1965) degrees in grain science.

After completing his studies, he accepted a faculty position in grain quality at Texas A&M University, where he remained until his retirement in 2013. Over his 48 year tenure, his research and teaching activities in the Cereal Quality Lab focused on improvement of the grain structure and chemistry of corn, sorghum, and wheat for food utilization. He worked with crop improvement programs domestically and internationally to develop crop cultivars with improved grain quality. In addition to research, Lloyd advised more than 130 graduate students pursuing degrees in food science.

Lloyd was recognized for his impact in research on numerous occasions, including the Texas A&M University Regents Award; the Texas A&M College of Agriculture Awards for Teaching and for Research and Collaborative Team Research; and the Mexican National Academy of Science Distinguished Researcher Award. He was named an AACC International Fellow (1993) and received the AACCI Excellence in Teaching Award (1997). Lloyd was an active AACCI member, presenting research at annual meetings and co-authoring and -editing AACCI books and journal articles. He was also a member of the AACCI Carbohydrate, Milling & Baking, and Education Divisions.

Lloyd is survived by his wife of 55 years, Maxine Rooney, their three children (and spouses): Bill (and Megan) Rooney, College Station, TX; Tammy (and Steve) Duke, Lucas, TX; and Marcille (and Salvador) Aldrett, Katy, TX; his grandchildren: William, David, and Travis Rooney; Kaitlyn, Cassandra, and Caroline Duke; and Andrew, Marielle, Gianna, and Annelise Aldrett; and great-grandchildren: Liam Rooney and two more due within the year.

Lloyd told his children to leave the world a better place than they found it, for themselves, their descendants, and others, setting an example as a devout family man and through his research and training of grain scientists working around the world. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the memorial scholarship in his name at Texas A&M University (Lloyd W. and Maxine Rooney Endowed Graduate Scholarship at the Texas A&M Foundation; www.txamfoundation.com) or to the Brazos Valley hospice organization (www.hospicebrazosvalley.org).
