Cereals: So, What Will the Food Safety Modernization Act Mean?

R. F. Stier. Sonoma, CA, U.S.A. Cereal Foods World 56(3):128-129.

In this column, Stier discusses the impact of the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010. Key provisions of the act include mandatory inspection frequency, expanded records access, mandatory recall authority, and import certification authority, which will be overseen by the FDA. HACCP/food safety, supply chain management, records maintenance, intentionally introduced hazards, and recalls and traceability are discussed. Although the food processing industry has some time before the regulations and policies that will allow enforcement of the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010 are finalized, the technical issues related to food processing are things that every food processor should be doing already—programs that are mandated not by the government but by their customers.
