Recovery of starch from waste water streams in corn, wheat, and rice processing plants. R. Simms. Technology Inc., Forth Smith, AR 72916.

Stainless steel membranes, with a porosity of 0.1 micron and capable of handling high levels of suspended solids, can be used to recover starch and waste starch from processing and/or waste streams in starch processing plants. Currently, it has been demonstrated that starch can be recovered and concentrated from waste streams in corn, wheat, and rice processing plants. The process recovers 100% of the suspended solids and, often, some portion of the solubles, producing a wastewater with minimal BOD/COD content. The paper will discuss the flux rates, recovery efficiencies, and stream qualities for corn, wheat, and rice starch recoveries.
