It's Time to Cast Your Ballot!
Members, electronic ballots will be sent to all
eligible voting members of the association (with
a valid e-mail address) on January 14;
paper ballots will be sent to those without. Running for president-elect is
David Hahn. Marta Izydorczyk and Don Thompson are running for director.

conclusion of the 2011
Annual Meeting.
U.S. Regulatory Summit: New Food Legislation and Regulations
There is a new U.S. Congress. Food legislation is in a state of evolution. Experts from the USDA, FDA, FTC, CSPI,
and more will gather in Washington, DC, U.S.A., on February 3, 2011, to
help you make sense of the changes, answer questions, and provide
guidance as we work to promote healthy dietary practices and ensure the
safety of the food supply.

Students�Show Us Your Research
The AACC Intl. Professional Development Panel (PDP) is sponsoring the
third annual Best Student Research Paper Competition. Academic departments may submit one nominee each for the competition; the top six submissions will compete for recognition and cash prizes
(first place: $1,250 cash award, $650 travel grant; second place: $750 cash award, $650 travel grant;
and third place: $500 cash award, $650 travel grant) in a special session at the AACC Intl. Annual Meeting. Visit AACCnet for

New Method for Evaluation of NIR Instrument Calibration Approved and Online
This procedure covers the general protocol to be adopted when an instrument�s calibration is statistically assessed.
AACC International Method 39-01.01 comes from the Near Infrared Analysis Committee, chaired by Stephen R. Delwiche. It was approved after review and vote of the
association�s Approved Methods Technical Committee in December 2010.
Cereal Chemistry Editor's Pick
The article, "Factors
Affecting the Alkaline Cooking Performance of Selected Corn and Sorghum
Hybrids," shows that both environment and genetics affect the
cooking properties of both corn and sorghum hybrids. This may open the
door to selection of hybrids that have better properties for the ever
growing Mexican food market.

Spring Meeting 2011: Abstract
Submission Deadline Approaching
The AACC Intl. Cereals&Europe Section is holding their
3rd International Spring Meeting 2011, April 11�13, 2011, at the University of Munich in Germany. The conference is entitled "Texture, Flavour, and Taste�Key Consumer Drivers to Healthy and High-Quality Cereal Products." You are invited to submit an abstract for the poster sessions and/or for oral presentations.
Abstract submissions are due January 14, 2011. The
early registration deadline is February 19, 2011.
Cincinnati Section
Meeting in March
The AACC Intl. Cincinnati Section together with the Soft Wheat Quality Lab in Wooster, OH,
U.S.A., is hosting a quality workshop on
soft wheat quality targets in Wooster on March 8 in conjunction with the Soft Wheat Research Review Conference.
The section dinner meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at TJ�s Restaurant in Wooster.

Engineering and Processing Division Best Student Paper Awards
The
Engineering
and Processing Division for the first time sponsored their
division's best student paper competition during the 2010
Annual Meeting. The first-place award went to Artem Pastukhov (Kansas State
University [KSU]) for �Effect of kneading speed on thermomechanical properties of flour doughs� and second place went to Samer Ali (KSU) for �Starch/polyvinyl alcohol/ Na+MMT based biodegradable nanocomposites produced through melt extrusion.� Other finalists were Anita Hirte (TI Food & Nutrition)
and Aditya Samala (Mississippi State University).
Young Scientist Award
Gets New Name
The Young Scientist Award of the
Rheology Division will now be named after Arie H. Bloksma. Almost all scientific papers of the past 40 years that cover dough rheology and bread-making quality, cite the papers authored or co-authored by Bloksma. His papers are virtually the starting point for all young cereal scientists entering the field of dough rheology.

Pinney Travel Award Applications Due March 1
The AACC International Foundation
Cecil F. Pinney Travel Award is a travel grant for professionals to attend the AACC
Intl. Annual Meeting. This award is for an individual establishing a career in grain science and technology who has been in their career
for less than eight years as of March 1 of the year of application. The candidate can apply for the travel award or can be nominated.
Please note, this award is for nonstudent members.
