Detecting Fusarium Damage in Oats
Fusarium head blight, also known as scab, is a serious disease of cereals. Infection leads to reduced grain yields, poor seed quality, and pathogen-produced toxins, including deoxynivalenol (DON). Tekle and colleagues examined the use of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to detect DON in individual oat kernels. HSI was found to successfully detect Fusarium damage and provided a better indication of DON content of kernels compared with visual examination. Therefore, HSI was demonstrated to hold potential in identifying Fusarium-infected kernels and reducing DON levels in grain lots of oats.
