Carbohydrate Division 

  • The business meeting was held September 30, 2013, during the AACCI annual meeting in Albuquerque, NM.
  • The 2012 Carbohydrate Division/Megazyme Award first place was awarded to Jong-Yea, University of Idaho; second place went to Nancy Salazar-Salas, Universidad Autonoma de Sinaloa; and third place went to Meric Simsek, Purdue University.

Education Division 

Division participated in the AACCI Best Student Paper Competition and also sponsored a dinner at the AACCI annual meeting for all the Best Student Competition Finalists. 

Engineering & Processing Division

  • Held a successful division meeting during the 2013 AACCI Annual Meeting in Albuquerque. In CFW Plexus a spotlight on Engineering & Processing: Highlights of current research in cereal foods processing, future trends in cereal engineering, and processing and focus on contributions by Division member, Prof. Sajid Alavi, Kansas State University.
  • The Engineering and Processing symposium had topics under the Engineering and Processing initiative at the 2013 annual meeting.
  • Held a division luncheon meeting during the 2013 annual meeting that included a lecture presented by the Buhler group on “Energy Efficient Pasta Processing Technologies.
  • Pavan Harshit Manepalli, Kansas State University, was awarded with the 2013 Engineering and Processing Division Best Paper Award.

Milling & Baking Division

Milling & Baking Division held their annual Spring Technical Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. The program: Myth Busters: Using Science and Technology to Understand the Industry included presentations on: Regulatory; Wheat Belly; Ancient Grains for Modern Nutrition; Gluten Free as Medicine for Non Celiac; the Halverson Memorial Lectureship:  Carbohydrates; Soft Wheat the Forgotten grain; What’s Shaking with Sodium; Sweetener Myths; Organic and Natural – are they better; Reformulating for Healthier Foods using Pulse Flours; Probiotics in Baking; Menu Labeling; Implementation of a 5-S Program; Oven Technology Trends and Sustainable Development; Milling Topics; Cleaning Wheat and Sustainable Baking. A luncheon and business meeting will be held at the annual meeting. The division is hosting a special session: Whole Grains, from Evolution to Revolution.

The Division also awarded the following awards for 2013:

  • Laurie Gorton, Sosland Publishing, was presented with the Myron D. (Mike) Baustian Memorial Award.
  • Glenn Gaesser, Arizona State University, was presented the John C. Halverson Memorial Lectureship.
  • Marie-Richer Roy, California State University received the George K. Minor Scholarship and Juhui Jeong, Kansas State University, received the M. Rella Dwyer Fellowship.

Rice Division

The Rice Division Symposium “Technologies & Issues for Rice Quality Determination” was organized by Delilah Wood, USDA/ARS/WRRC and sponsored by the Rice Division. The Rice Division luncheon was held on September 30, 2013, and included speaker, John Manful, Africa Rice Center, Cotonou, Benin, lecture title: The Secrets of Oryza glaberrima.
