The grain-based foods industry has seen its share of adversity, much of it promulgated by publications citing the proposed negative health effects of consuming wheat and other sources of carbohydrates. Consumers today have access to a wealth of information regarding foods and health, and sales of grain-based foods have suffered due to the influence of negative reports. To remain relevant, members of the grain-based foods industry need to think differently about their roles and the segments of the value chain in which they participate. Collaborating across the value chain, expanding capabilities, and leveraging product differentiation can turn adversity into opportunities for growers, millers, and manufacturers alike.
