Science Versus Politics: Who Holds the Trump Card?

JoanneSlavin

University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN, U.S.A., jslavin@umn.edu. Cereal Foods World 60(1):57-58.

In this column, Slavin looks at the science behind recent regulations in the United States mandating that places selling food products (including chain restaurants, movie theaters, vending machines, convenience stores, grocery store delis, and bars) must post calorie counts for those foods. Although the regulations are designed to help consumers make informed purchasing choices and limit their calorie intake, the results of the limited studies conducted to date consistently suggest that calorie content labeling has no impact on consumer food purchasing choices. Slavin argues that providing dietary guidance is challenging and that we should not accept nutrition policy that is not supported by science.
