The Impact of Cereal Beta-Glucan on Body Weight in Humans​

​​This webinar summarizes existing clinical evidence on the relationship between consumption oats and body weight. A systematic review of good quality clinical and observational studies revealed that consumption of oats containing at least 3g beta-glucan soluble fiber per day demonstrated significant decrease in body weight, body mass index (BMI) and other measures of adiposity in healthy, overweight individuals.


Why is this important?

​​​Overweight and obesity can lead to chronic diseases such as CVD, diabetes and continue to be a major health concerns in the United States. Recent population surveys reveal that Covid-19 pandemic has negatively impacted body weight. Dietary modification has shown to be an effective strategy in maintaining healthy body weight. The summary of research presented in this webinar suggests adding oats containing at least 3g beta-glucan to the daily diet can help maintain healthy body weight and BMI.


​About the Presenter​​


Varsha Shete
Senior Scientist, PepsiCo.

Varsha Shete is a Senior Scientist in the Global R&D Health and Nutrition Sciences division of PepsiCo. She is part of grains research team where she has been leading research projects to understand impact of oats on human health, specifically in satiety, weight management and digestive health. She comes from a research background with MS and PhD in Food Science from Rutgers University, NJ where her research focused on metabolism of carotenoids and their impact on health. She did her postdoctoral research at Northwestern University, Chicago where her research focused on understanding biochemical pathways that lead to metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.
